Is it Time for Power Steering Repair?
Modern vehicles are chock full of complex systems that make driving a relatively simple thing to do. From electric starters to ABS brakes, vehicles are continuously becoming more and more technologically advanced and easier to control. But one thing hasn't changed, the fact that vehicles and their systems still need regular maintenance in order to operate properly. Fluid flushes, oil changes, filter, belt and hose replacements and more are all part of the general auto maintenance our vehicles require to stay in great shape. Without these services parts will deteriorate and the car will become unsafe. Of course regular wear and tear from high miles can also become an issue, which is another reason it is important to pay attention to the signs your car is giving you about trouble. The power steering system has a few signs of its own that lets you know if needs maintenance or repair and they should never be ignored, since the steering system is one of the most important parts of the whole car!
Tight Steering Wheel
An obvious sign of steering trouble is a difficult to turn steering wheel. This is often caused by a power steering fluid leak but it can also be caused by problems within the mechanical parts of power steering system or in the steering column. You should be aware though that a tough to turn steering wheel could be caused by alignment issues or even something as simple as low tire pressure. If you have trouble cranking the wheel be sure to have a certified mechanic identify the issue.
Vibrating Steering Wheel
Likely the most common issues related to power steering problems is a malfunctioning drive belt which will cause the steering wheel to vibrate. This happens if the belt is torn or begins to slip from its pulley. A quick test to determine if this is an issue is to put the car in park or neutral and turn the steering wheel from the far left to the far right back and forth and try to identify a spot in the steering radius where the wheel begins to vibrate. If the vibration occurs at a single spot the problem area of the belt will be easier to diagnose.
A whining noise that occurs as you turn the steering wheel likely indicates some sort of power steering trouble. The noise is usually caused by a power steering pump that's low on power steering fluid, but it may indicate a pump that can no longer function at all. Check the power steering fluid reservoir to ensure there is the correct amount of fluid, if there is then the problem is likely a faulty power steering pump.
Your ability to steer is too important to let these issues rest on the back burner so be sure to visit a mechanic at the first sign of trouble.
