Few things are worse than jumping in your car, turning the key and not having the car start. Your heart suddenly feels like it is in your stomach as your turn the key over and over, getting nothing but a sputter until the battery dies completely leaving you stranded in your driveway, or wherever you may be. But what causes a car to not start? Well it could be one of many issues, but here are some of the most common reasons a car won't start.
Fuel System Problem
There are a couple things that could go wrong with the fuel system that would prevent a car from starting. Fuel pumps will fail after many years of use and a clogged fuel filter can drastically lower the amount of gas getting to the engine.
Faulty Ignition Switch
If you ignition switch or any component of the system fails your car will not be able to start. Signs of a bad ignition include the key not turning, accessories working but the car will not start or flickering dash lights.
If you turn the key and only hear a single click, or a repeated click, click, click then you likely have an issue with your starter motor and you may need starter repair or replacement.
The alternator is what charges the vehicle's battery while the car is turned on. If the alternator fails the battery will quickly be drained and the car won't be able to start next time you're ready to go.
A dead battery is one of the most common causes of a no start situation. If the lights or some other accessory were left on for an extended period of time while the car was not running then your battery was likely drained. In this case you will just need to jump start your car. However batteries do wear out and die after several years.
