My Car Won't Start, What Could it Be?
Few things are as frustrating when it comes to car trouble then when you get in, turn the key, and nothing happens. There are plenty of reasons why your car might not start, but based on what occurs when you do turn the key you can generally figure out the issue pretty quickly. The following are four of the most common reasons a car won't start, but it is always a good idea to let a professional technician conduct the diagnostics to ensure the right problem gets fixed.
Just like the batteries in your TV remote your car battery occasionally needs to be replaced. However, it can also die if lights are left on or the radio is played when the motor isn't running but the key is on, and in these cases the car will simply need a jumpstart to get back up and running. If your car's battery is in fact dead nothing will happen when you turn the key and lights or other accessories won't come on.
The starter motor is what gets the engine moving. When the key is turned the starter is activated, at which point it actuates its pinion gear to connect to the flywheel in order to spin it. This provides the movement necessary to keep the engine running under its own power after combustion starts. If the starter has failed you will generally hear a single loud click or a series of clicks when you turn the key, which is the noise the mechanism makes when it actuates, but doesn't spin.
The alternator is what keeps the battery charged when the engine is running. While the motor is running the alternator is responsible for providing power to lights and other power accessories and any extra electricity it produces is stored in the battery to assist with starting. You may notice strange occurrences with your vehicle's electrical system before having trouble starting your car. This may include a radio that doesn't operate yet, flickering or dim headlights or problems getting power windows to go up or down.
Fuel Delivery Problem
If fuel is unable to make it to the combustion chamber the engine will simply turn over and over and over without starting. The most common causes of fuel delivery problems include a failed fuel pump and less often, an extremely dirty fuel filter.
