Common Auto Electric Problems You Should Know

Common Auto Electric Problems You Should KnowAll modern cars and trucks, not just electric or hybrid ones, utilize electricity to perform a wide variety of operations. While the engine may run primarily off gasoline, it needs electricity in order to properly operate also. The electrical system in your vehicle is very vast, and it takes on many tasks. Diagnosing problems with the electrical system in modern cars and trucks can be quite difficult, but depending on the symptoms that you are having it will at least point you in the right direction in regard to how to identify the trouble. If you experience a rough running vehicle or have any sort of electrical trouble in your car it is likely due to one of the following common auto electric issues.

Blown Fuse

One of the most common troubles in regard to auto electric problems has to do with a blown fuse. If a specific system quits working in your vehicle you will want to first check the fuse box. Fuses are what dictate the amount of electricity that is transferred to a certain part, and if the fuse goes bad it will cause the system to no longer be able to operate, as electrical current will be cut off. Replacing a fuse is very inexpensive and quick and can often be done at home.

Bad Alternator

The alternator is primarily responsible for keeping the battery charged in your vehicle. It is hooked up to a belt system that is rotated by the spinning of the engine, and the resulting motion allows the alternator to create electricity that is then transferred and stored in the battery. If the alternator goes out your battery will quickly be drained of its power and the car will not be able to start.

Corroded Spark Plugs

In order to ignite the air/fuel that is pumped into your engine electrical current is transferred through the spark plug wires to the spark plugs which creates a small explosion to ignite the mixture. This is what keeps the pistons pumping. However, if spark plugs become dirty or miss-gapped they can misfire, causing a rough running engine or a vehicle that won't be able to run at all!

Dead Battery

Vehicle batteries can die for a variety of reasons, including driver error, such as when they leave the lights on, or because of a stuck relay. If the battery dies you will no longer have the ability to start your car or operate any of the accessories within it. More often than not a jumpstart will resolve this issue, however batteries do die on their own after several years of use and require replacement.

If you experience any auto electric troubles it is important to have a professional mechanic look into the issue to ensure it is properly resolved.
