Common Car Problems that Prevent the Engine from Starting

Common Car Problems that Prevent the Engine from StartingWhen it first becomes apparent that your car isn't firing up as easily as usual, you'll want to have the mechanic take a look. If you delay, then the underlying issue could soon get worse and prevent your engine from starting at all. At McKonly's Garage, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and repairing issues that cause no-start.

Common Causes of No-Start

In many cases, no-start is due to issues with fuel supply. If your fuel pump isn't working properly, then fuel may not be successfully sent from the tank to the engine. Warning signs of fuel pump failure include decreasing gas mileage, sputtering, and a whining sound coming from the tank. A clogged fuel filter can also cause no-start. It's smart to replace your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles so that gunk in the filter doesn't impede the flow of fuel. Dirty fuel injectors may also cause issues with getting the engine to start. To clean injectors, you can try using a fuel additive.

Another common reason that cars won't start is because of problems with the battery/charging system. There are many reasons why car batteries die, such as: parasitic draws, old age, loose/corroded connections, leaving headlights on, and a failing alternator. Symptoms of a bad alternator include flickering/dimming headlights, stalling, and malfunctioning interior electrical accessories. Oftentimes, the first sign of alternator trouble is a dashboard warning light that reads ALT or GEN or lights up in the shape of a little battery.

A bad starter is another issue that commonly prevents engines from starting. If you turn the key and get nothing except a clicking sound, then you've got a sign of starter trouble. A failing starter can also cause a grinding sound.
