4 Signs of Cooling System Trouble
The cooling system has one of the most important jobs when it comes to keeping your vehicle healthy. By pumping coolant, also known as antifreeze, through the engine the cooling system effectively regulates the temperature of the engine to ensure that temperatures do not rise too high, which can cause major engine problems for your vehicle that will require extensive auto repair. The most obvious sign of cooling system trouble is white steam billowing out from under the hood as you drive your car. If this happens pull over immediately, however you may also encounter these other 4 signs that may require radiator repair.
Rising Temperature Gauge
On your vehicle's dashboard there are several gauges that inform you of vehicle performance, one of them is the engine's temperature, which is often depicted by a blue zone and a red zone. If the needle on the gauge rises into the red zone under normal driving conditions or on a regular basis there is a good chance your cooling system is struggling. However this can also be caused by a faulty thermostat.
Paint Discoloration or Rust
If you happen to be looking under the hood and notice that there is random spots of paint discoloration or rust throughout the engine bay there is a good chance that the radiator or a cooling system hose has spring a leak. If this fluid is sprayed onto hot engine parts it will quickly boil away, taking the paint with it and the areas will quickly begin to rust.
Low Coolant Fluid
As part of your routine maintenance you should regularly check your coolant fluid level (but only when the car's engine is very cool!) to make sure there is a sufficient amount. If it is found be low there is a chance that the coolant is leaking inside the engine and being burnt up with the gasoline. This will also be characterized by excessive amounts of white smoke.
Visible Coolant Leak
If you find a puddle of bright green fluid collecting underneath your engine where you park your car you have just discovered a coolant leak. It is important to quickly take care of coolant leaks as they put you at high risk of overheating problems.
If you suspect issues with the cooling system or have already suffered from an overheating episode be sure to visit your local auto repair shop to have the problem identified.
