Must do: End of Summer Auto Maintenance
Summertime often results in more miles on cars and trucks, thanks to the nicer weather inviting people to take more trips, both near and far. If you have found your odometer going up, up, up this summer, it's time to think about your car's maintenance needs. The additional miles can take quite a toll on a car, so it's always a good idea to perform some light maintenance to ensure there is no potential issues. Here's a quick checklist to help you get your car back up to speed for fall and winter.
Check your tires
If you've been cruising the highways this summer be sure to check your tire's tread, air pressure and overall condition. If you notice any cracking of the rubber, or if the tread is wearing thin, you'll want to make an appointment for new tires. Air pressure may decrease with excessive miles, but this can often be remedied by simply pumping the tires up to their required air pressure rating. If it starts to drop again a trip to the tire shop will be necessary.
Change your oil
Do you remember the last time you had your oil changed? If it wasn't over the summer then now is the perfect time to do this ever important service. Oil changes are necessary for most cars and trucks every 3,000 miles, as during that time frame oil collects many contaminants from inside the engine. This causes the oil to become gunky and prevents it from providing proper lubrication to the moving parts.
Check fluid levels
Your car uses several other fluids other than engine oil to operate its systems. You can check the levels of the cooling system and transmission fairly simply on most vehicles. Take note of their levels, and if they are low, schedule an appointment with a local mechanic for further diagnostics.
Note needed scheduled maintenance
Before heading into the winter you'll want to have any necessary auto maintenance completed, as dictated by your vehicle's service schedule inside the owner's manual. There are several services required by cars and trucks at different mileage points, including transmission service, belt and hose replacement and more. If you've hit the mileage mark for these maintenance be sure not to put them off, as doing so can lead to major problems for your vehicle's numerous systems.
