5 Common Check Engine Light Problems
You're driving down the road, or more likely, sitting in traffic, and the check engine light comes on. A brief moment of panic hits... and then it seems like most drivers just forget about it and hope it goes away. That's a bad idea! Ignoring a check engine light will just lead to bigger problems down the road. Most of the time a check engine light is indicating an issue that is a relatively easy fix. Here are 5 common reasons the check engine light comes on.
Bad Catalytic Converter
A failed catalytic converter is often a worst case scenario. This part of your exhaust system converts hazardous gases into less harmful emissions before they are released out of the tailpipe. Unfortunately it is one of the most expensive parts to repair, but it will usually only fail because of a much smaller problem started long ago, such as the following two issues, which also would have triggered the light.
Replace Oxygen Sensor
Oxygen sensors monitor unburned oxygen in the exhaust which helps regulate how fuel is used to maximize fuel efficiency. If the oxygen sensor fails your vehicle will end up burning excessive amounts of fuel, which is what can harm the catalytic converter.
Bad MAF Sensor
The MAF, or mass air flow sensor, monitors incoming air and adjusts how much fuel it needs to be mixed with. It can go bad if the air filter is installed wrong or is never replaced. A faulty MAF will drop your MPGs very quickly and again cause excessive fuel to be burnt.
Replace Spark Plugs
Old spark plugs that get corroded or become miss-gapped after many miles on the road will cause your vehicle to misfire, which means your vehicle's engine is not firing on all cylinders.
Faulty Gas Cap
A loose, cracked or otherwise broken gas cap will allow fuel vapors to leak out of the filler hose, which can throw a big wrench in the fuel systems operation. It will reduce your gas mileage and increase emissions. Make sure your gas cap is tight every time you fill up.
