Easy Maintenance Ideas to Improve Fuel Efficiency
As we head into the warmer months you will want to provide your vehicle with a little bit of maintenance to ensure it is capable of covering the excess amount of miles that many Americans drive during the spring and summer. Vehicle services that increase miles per gallon are often simple and can be completed quickly at your local auto repair shop. So before you head out on the cross-country journey this summer give your car the attention it deserves so that in return it can give you the best possible fuel efficiency.
Change the air filter
If the air filter becomes clogged your vehicles engine will not be able to create the proper air and gasoline mixture that is necessary to properly run the engine. To compensate for the lack of oxygen an excess amount of fuel may burnt, which will drastically decrease your miles per gallon.
Replace the spark plugs
The spark plugs are what create the tiny explosion pumps the pistons up and down. After 20,000 to 30,000 miles they may become corroded, dirty or their gap may be thrown off, which can lead to misfiring. Because spark plugs fire thousands of times per minute any misfiring can cause a poor running engine as well as majorly decreased fuel efficiency.
Properly inflate your tires
Properly inflated tires are absolutely necessary to get the best possible fuel-efficiency from your vehicle. Tire air pressure is rated in psi, or pounds per square inch, and for every 1 psi below the recommended air pressure rating that a tire is underinflated your vehicle's gas mileage drops 0.3%. You can check your vehicles tire pressure rating in the owner's manual or inside the driver's door jamb. You can also purchase in air pressure meter very inexpensively at most auto parts stores, and fill your tires at almost any service station.Keep up with scheduled maintenance
Of course if you want to get a long life out of your car as well as great fuel economy you need to keep up with all the necessary scheduled maintenance services listed in the vehicle's owner's manual. This includes completing 30/60/90K services as well as oil changes and filter replacements.
Owning a vehicle is a great pleasure and convenience for many people, but it is also an investment. To get the most out of it be sure to provide your vehicle with the auto maintenance it needs in order to perform at its peak. For professional auto maintenance in Lancaster head to McKonly's Garage.
