Is it Time for New Shocks or Struts?
Your vehicle's suspension system has several important tasks. While most people just associate the suspension with ride comfort, and rightfully so, it does much more than that. Aside from absorbing all the bumps of the roads the suspension also ensures that all four wheels remain planted on the ground so that adequate braking power is available as soon as it is needed. Another import job of the suspension system is keeping the vehicle upright when going around sharp bends, generally at higher speeds. If you ever notice any of these signs of suspension failure get to a repair shop right away to ensure your car, truck or SUV is safe to operate.
Oil on the struts
The struts use a specialized il in order to absorb the uneven surfaces of the roadway. If the strut's covering cracks or if the oil is able to leak from a seal you will soon notice that your ride just got a lot more bumpy. This can result in very poor handling of the vehicle so be sure to have the strut(s) replaced as soon as possible.
One corner of the vehicle is low
If it appears that one corner of your vehicle is low but all of the tires or properly inflated then the most appropriate conclusion is tired suspension. If the shocks grow worn they will collapse on themselves. This will result in your vehicle drifting while driving and it will also alter and increase tire wear.
Rolling sensation when cornering
A very scary symptom of suspension trouble is the feeling that your vehicle is going to roll over when going around a corner. The anti-sway bar, a part of the suspension system, is tasked with keeping the car upright by shifting the vehicle's center of gravity as it travels through a curve. If it is unable to do so you will be left with the gut wrenching feeling or rolling over or otherwise losing control.
If you believe that your suspension is on its way out you can perform a quick test to check your hypothesis. Press on the hood or trunk of your vehicle to get it to start bouncing up and down. The vehicle should return to its normal ride height within 3-4 bounces, any more than that and you'll likely need some sort of suspension repair.
