Is it Time for Transmission Repair or Service?

Is it Time for Transmission Repair or Service?Your car is made up of many individual systems and parts that work together in order to get you from A to B. While it is the engine that generates the power that moves your car it is the transmission that transfers that power to the wheels, which it does so via the driveshaft. A failing transmission could eventually leave you stranded, so be sure to always pay attention for any signs of trouble. If you notice any of the following you'll want to reach out to a qualified auto repair shop as soon as possible.

Slipping Gears

A common sign of transmission trouble is if your car suddenly pops out of gear, or in an automatic transmission, shifts between gears erratically. The latter may be a computer control issue but what is more likely is low levels of transmission fluid.

Delayed Shifts

When you shift from park to drive your vehicle should begin to move immediately. If you notice that the engine revs high while the transmission shifts between gears don't hesitate to contact a repair shop.

Burning Smell

If you drive an automatic transmission vehicle and smell something burning as you shift the transmission may be overheating, causing the fluid to boil. This would result in insufficient lubrication inside the transmission. If you drive a manual transmission and notice a burning smell while shifting then it is likely time for a new clutch.

Can't get into Gear

One of the more obvious signs of trouble is if you can't get your car into one or more gears, including reverse. This usually indicates a major mechanical failure that could require a transmission rebuild.

Transmission Fluid Leak

If you spot a red liquid on your driveway under your car it is likely transmission fluid. Low levels of transmission fluid can cause many problems, including most of the above.

Grinding Noises

Any strange noises, including grinding or whining, that occur while you shift should be addressed by a professional mechanic. There are many things going on inside a transmission, many of which can cause these noises which indicate trouble ahead.
