Car Won't Start? 4 Signs Your Starter has Failed
It is a rather complex series of events that must occur to get a vehicle started, with many parts working together to get the engine running. One of the most crucial pieces of this intricate puzzle is the starter. When the key is turned an electrical charge is sent to the starter that makes it engage with the flywheel then spins it in order to get the pistons pumping before it is able to keep itself running. While there are a number of reasons that can result in a car not being able to start, judging by the symptoms in your particular situation you'll likely be able to to tell if it's the starter that is giving you a problem.
Loud Click or Multiple Clicks
If you hear a loud single click or a series of click, click, clicking, when you try to start the vehicle this is positive indicator of starter motor trouble. While the starter is apparently receiving the electrical current needed to engage and actuate in order to connect with the flywheel, it's likely the starter motor solenoid has failed.
If the pinion gear, the part of the starter motor assembly that engages with the flywheel, is unable to actually connect with the flywheel you will just hear a noise that resembles something of a "whirr." This is the noise of the starter spinning alone, which means it has failed to connect with the flywheel.
A grinding noise that happens after you turn the key may be caused by a loose starter motor, meaning the mounting bolts need to be tightened. It could also represent worn or missing teeth on the pinion gear or flywheel, thus not allowing the two gears to properly mesh to crank the motor.
A buzzing noise, but no motor cranking can be caused by a flow of electrical current running to the starter motor, but not enough to get the pinion gear to actuate. This problem is generally caused by a dying battery or corroded or dirty electrical connections in the starting system.
