4 Signs your Vehicle Needs Suspension Repair
Your vehicle is made of many different systems that work together in order to provide you with a safe and reliable ride. Safety is key when it comes to a healthy suspension. While many people associate the suspension as a comfort feature, it is much more than that. The suspension, aside from absorbing the bumps in the road, is also tasked with keeping all four tires on the ground to ensure adequate braking abilities, as well as prevent your vehicle from rolling over during cornering. If you experience any of these signs of suspension failure do not hesitate to get in touch with your local mechanic.
One corner is low
A common sign that there is suspension trouble is if you notice that one corner of your car is low, yet all of the tires are properly inflated. This generally indicates that the suspension in that particular corner has failed. This means it is likely that the strut has collapsed on itself and needs to be replaced.
Another way to tell if a strut has failed is if there is oil on the outside of it. Struts utilize a special liquid in order to help them operate in a way that allows them to absorb the roughness of the roadway. It you feel this oil on the outside of the strut it will need to be replaced as the seal or casing has failed.
Sensation of rolling over
One of the scariest symptoms of suspension failure is the feeling that the vehicle is going to roll over during cornering. The anti-sway bar is designed to shift the vehicle's center of gravity during cornering and if it fails you'll receive the gut wrenching sensation of tipping over. Head to a repair shop as soon as possible to keep your car safe to drive.
There is an easy test that you can perform if you believe you're having suspension trouble. Simply push on the hood or trunk of your car to get it to start bouncing. Once you stop pressing on the vehicle it should return to its normal ride height within 3 to 4 bounces. If it continues to move much beyond there there is fair reason to believe that some suspension parts have worn and need to be replaced.
