Warning Signs of Cooling System Trouble that We Can Fix at Our Lancaster Auto Shop
If your engine overheats, then major problems could result, such as a cracked block. For this reason, it's crucial that your cooling system remains in excellent condition. Important components of the cooling system include the radiator, pressure cap, water pump, thermostat, and hoses. If you notice a sign of trouble with any aspect of your cooling system, you'll want to have a mechanic take a look. At McKonly's Garage, our local mechanics are highly experienced with diagnosing and fixing cooling system problems.
Common Symptoms of Cooling System Failure
In many cases, overheating occurs due to leaks in the cooling system. If for some reason your coolant has gotten low, then you'll want to figure out if a leak is present. If coolant is leaking internally, then you could see a high amount of white exhaust smoke, which is symptomatic of a blown head gasket. With an external coolant leak, you may see bright green fluid on the ground, though your coolant could be a different color such as yellow, pink, or orange. And if your coolant warning light is on, then there's another reason to check for a leak. When coolant is leaking, the drop in fluid pressure can lower your coolant's boiling point, which increases the chances that you'll see white steam billowing out from under your hood. In a situation where you need to add coolant, make sure you first let your engine cool. If you open the cap to add coolant with a hot engine, then scalding fluid may shoot upward and burn you.
Another warning sign of cooling system trouble is that your temp gauge has entered the red zone. If you see that your engine temperature is getting concerningly high, it'll be best to pull over when it's safe to do so. Then you can give the shop a call and explain the situation, at which point you can get advice on whether your vehicle seems safely operable.
