At the first sign of suspension failure, you'll want to have a mechanic take a look. At McKonly's Garage, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and repairing suspension issues.

Indications of Suspension Trouble

Signs of suspension trouble sometimes arise during the braking process. Suspension failure can make it feel like your car is lunging forward at a downward angle when you step on the brakes. A bad suspension can also make your car take longer to come to a stop when your brakes are engaged.

If your car starts bouncing heavily when you hit any little rough patch in the road, then you're probably dealing with a faulty suspension. And if you notice clunking noises when hitting bumps, then there's a good chance you have a damaged spring. Your car may sit lower in the corner that has spring damage.

By doing a quick test, you can get a better sense of whether your suspension is in rough shape. First off, make sure your car is securely parked. Then push down hard on its front end and rock it twice before letting go. After that, go around to the rear and repeat this step on the back end. Upon releasing, your car shouldn't rock more than three times on its own. If it does continue to rock more than this, then there's reason to have a mechanic take a look at your suspension.

There are a couple other common symptoms of suspension trouble to be mindful of. If you can see oil leaking onto your shocks, then replacement will probably be necessary. And if it seems like you're drifting or swaying when taking corners, then a faulty suspension could be to blame.
